Winter Horse Photography

Minnesota winters can bring you down a degree or two, but our hearts stayed plenty warm watching these beauties play in the snow.

Jennifer was so kind to let me crash her snow day and take photos of her family's horses. Her dogs joined us in the adventure too!

I like to meet the horses I'm photographing before I start shooting. This usually entails the horse sniffing my camera, getting a few face rubs in and fogging up my glasses.

Clark was the first to meet me at the gate, followed by Zippy. Hiding in the lean-to from the winter storm was Kip. I don't blame him for trying to stay warm - it was a blizzard outside!

The untouched pasture called to them, begging to have their hooves lay new tracks in the powder. As the snow whorled behind them, the horses led each other down the hill for their winter run.

After they let go of their energy, they wandered into the woods to graze on the tall grass left from fall. Snowflakes landed on their manes, creating a winter coat like no other.  The snow was falling heavy and soon the winter coats melted from their body heat, leaving matted patterns in their fur.

As our day ended, I found myself enjoying every moment with the horses, the snow falling around me, and the dogs jumping though snow.
